Cut Price Tragedy

"Cut Price Tragedy" discusses the crash of the ValueJet owned McDonnell Douglas DC9 aircraft in to the Florida Everglades, near Miami International  Airport on May 11 1996.

This is one of the 12 DVDs in the acclaimed BBC series now available in a totally new format with expert training support material.

Investigations revealed many deficiencies in airline maintenance procedures as a result from cost cutting.  Behind the scenes investigators found a range of issues involving the cut price nature of the business with outsourcing of most tasks including heavy maintenance and poor surveillance of quality by both the airline and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The fatal crash investigation also uncovered an FAA memo recommending that Valuejet be grounded.

 
The FAA was compromised by having two tasks that were at odds with each other: they were supposed to regulate the industry as well as promote the industry.  On one hand supposed to be corporate watchdogs, but also ensure all assistance was rendered in the promotion of the industry.  Disturbingly some indications were that mismanagement of key information was deliberate.
